Time for Feathers to Fold'em

"You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run......"

Read this article from exactly a year ago and then tell anybody who will listen why we should listen to Feathers and Rita this year.

  1. I think the flip-flop is this.....when the gambling market gets saturated, like it is in New York, when you add additional gambling operations what happens is a revenue "shift" from one operation to another. It doesn't generate "new" revenue. More slots, lottery drops.....it's that simple. That's what Feathers was saying a year ago, and it's what the State Comptroller said this year.

And in a parallel example, do you think putting 677 Prime in the Thompson Hill location is going to improve business for Chez Mike? That's what they've been trying to tell you with the "double-think" about local business improvement being driven by the addition of a casino to the community. The business model is to get you INSIDE and keep you there to take as much money as possible while you are there. It's that simple. And our Board fell for it, hook line and sinker with no questions asked.

  3. Gadfly,
I just finished reading the articles. The only decent course of action is for Supervisor Langley and Councilperson Matters to resign immediately. This is a textbook example of malfeasance in office. Langley and Matters have placed their own crass, partisan political careers ahead of the concerns of the people. I am a supporter of the casino project, but I want it to be done in an ethical way. Speaking of ethics, do you and Mr. Conway have any thoughts about whether the quid pro quo discussions outlined in the "Political Nuance Among Those Casino Notes" article by Chris Churchill warrants the filing of an ethics complaint to the Town Ethics Board?

  4. When your elected officials are dumb that's a problem. When your elected officials are incompetent that's a problem. When your elected officials are corrupt that's a problem.

When your elected officials are dumb, incompetent, and corrupt they are the East Greenbush town board.

I know that's nasty. And I desperately wish it were not the case. But the objective evidence is overwhelming and powerful.

It started with the Organizational Meeting and continued, without interruption or relief, ever since.

People who supported Langley, Matters and DiMartino because they were anybody but the democrats offerings are now non supporters. It only took 6 months for the new board majority to show as flamingly incompetent; evil even.

I could see civil disobedience in Langley's future after his arrogant approach to public input at this month's town board meeting. The guy is horrible and Matters and DiMartino are too. And I supported them over and over and over.

Here's to hoping an independent slate of candidates emerges for the next election.

    1. Dear Neighbor.....I have no problem whatsoever with a democratically run government. It's when my government resorts to duplicity, secrecy, manipulation and pay-offs to accomplish its ends that we have to draw the line. Some of those FOILed notes pretty much nailed what was going on, and I'm sure its not comfortable for those caught in the mischief. The obvious lesson? Don't do that stuff. Run the government in a competent, open, transparent and accountable manner and you won't be embarrassed. Telling me to leave town will not solve the problem of the content of your character.

  7. Dear neighbor, whether you like Don or not. Can you honestly tell me the board handled the casino issue properly? Secret meetings,no due diligence, attacking anyone who questions the boards motives. If you think that's acceptable you need to hang out with Langley, Defuscio,Matters and Torino. It is obvious that you do not know Don, so I assume you are talking about a John Donson-whomever that is. Without Don and his friends, we would still be in the dark concerning the corruption that has and possibly still is taking place in East Greenbush.
I consider EG lucky to have Don, an extremely intelligent man, willing to give his time and energy working to make EG the Town we all wish it was. With Don and his friends, someday it may be that Town.

These idiots did not and now will end up losing. Not one said no despite their reservations. This wasn't guaranteed. I can't understand why they went the distance of stupidity without a standing up. It really is a failure of leadership on all of their parts. We need to boot all of them out because the whole lot is rotten. East Greenbush needs smart responsible governing. This obviously is not a group that will do it. We need to start a recall.

  15. @ 9:53 AM, I couldn't agree more! It's also important for voters to attend the monthly Town Board meetings to see first hand the lack of leadership by Supervisor Langley and his cronies. Ms. Mangold is revealing that the town board members KNOW that they are not doing the people's work. That the town board KNOWS they are voting against the will of the majority of the citizens of our town...but they did it anyway.

These five members of the town board must think they are tyrants free to do as they please without consequence.

Langley, Gilbert and the majority members clearly feel this way.

And they could not be more wrong.

We live in a democracy however these tyrants might wish otherwise. Their attitude, arrogance, stupidity and recklessness is what leads to revolutions. The large turnout for recent meetings and the content and volume of both town blogs is our civil version of a revolution.

  27. Mary Ann Matters made a comment on the TU Capitol Confidential. Here is my reply:
    Your comment is awaiting moderation.

    June 27, 2014 at 6:56 pm

    Mary Ann Matters:
Polls? Could you please release the poll data and method of collection?

You were duly elected to make decisions: Yes, this is true. But, weren’t you elected to represent the public? If the opposition spoke “loudly” why didn’t just one board member vote NO to represent those in opposition? It seemed clear at the three public meetings that there were a large number of people who opposed, couldn’t you represent their voice, especially when you voted after other board members?

You state that you had a limited amount of time: if you were rushed, were you able to thoroughly examine the developer’s plan? If you were rushed, were you able to gather any guarantees from the developer? If you were rushed, couldn’t you have written to the Gaming Board stating that municipalities felt rushed and made a recommendation that Resolutions be voted on AFTER the June 30th deadline? Aren’t you in charge of the town, or is it actually the developer?

You state that the town is in financial peril. What is your “Plan B”? If the NY Gaming Board chooses another site, how will you address the financial peril? Will you put the blame on the casino opposition or will you admit that there is NO Plan B for the town?

You state that you want to see the town grow and prosper. So do all of the people who oppose the casino. Have you reached out to those people and met with them to see if they can work with the Town Board? Have you treated their opposition with respect? Do you return their phone calls and emails? If the answer to any of those questions is NO, then you really do NOT represent the people of the town. When you were elected to this position you must have been aware that there would be opposition in many different situations. The Town Board should practice diplomacy and work WITH people who you call opposition because at this time, there are a lot of residents that fall into this category and they are not going anywhere.

Dear Gadfly, There has been talk about supporting better candidates for the next election cycle. While the Republicans haven't yet had potential candidates surface the Democrat party seems to be promoting Cheryl Vallee and Andrea Smythe to run for an office.
Wouldn't it be fair to hear from them to weigh in on the thought of a Casino on Thompson Hill. Wouldn't it also be fair to hear from the major party committee chairpersons as to their position on a casino on Thompson Hill.

    1. Ms.Vallee and Ms.Smythe should absolutely explain to the residents of our town where they stand on this Casino in East Greenbush. We have a right to know now before they can spin the issue politically in their favor as the process continues. How they feel now is what is important to the voters, not what is popular down the road.
At least we know where the current board stands now. Don't let these future politicians fool us anymore. This issue is to important not to know where they stand.

      Delete
  30. In my opinion a casino will ultimately be detrimental to E.G. That being said, I have no issue with the people who feel differently - that's their right .Whether Ms. Vallee or Ms. Smythe support the casino or not - it is up to them. What is important to me is if they exercised their choice in a proper and informative way. If you were at the last board meeting I believe you would have seen that Ms.Smythe voiced her displeasure with the way things were done.
Ms. Valle and Ms. Smythe would be good choices for the board, however, the process of picking candidates has a long way to go .What I read into the comments of 7:27 and 10:22 is that they support the Republicans and want the Dems to tip their hand. Langley and crew could care less what others think - they tried to sneak the casino through. Maryann Matters tried to discourage a law suit telling people to " save your money". I'll bet Eileen Grant was told the same thing. How did that work out MaryAnn? I want people elected who will l isten to the residents, involve the residents, and not try to hide things from said residents. The next election will be about candidates you can trust - not party affiliation. Oh. and of course, we need a new supervisor!

    ReplyDelete
  31. What is wrong with Mary Ann Matters? She states "we would have done things the right way if we had more time". Is that a joke? Is Mary Ann admitting that she did things the wrong way? Does Mary Ann think that a $300mllliion project only needs 3 days to decide? Does she think that the fact that the board didn't research the pros and cons of a casino is okay because there was only 3 days?

Mary Ann - after the April resolution was voided , you had additional time to listen to the residents at the meetings. After all of the complaints about how things were done, after resident after resident spoke against the casino....you disregarded everything presented to you and still voted for the casino. Mary Ann....what further research did you personally do on the casino issue taking into account everything you witnessed at the meetings on the casino?

Mary Ann - did you run to be an independent board member who can think for herself or to be a bobble head doll for the supervisor? Tell us, the voters, what due diligence did you do before making your decision? I suggest your husband would not have made such a huge decision in three days. Rick would not have been pressured into making such an important decision for the future of our town.

Maybe the wrong Matters is on the board. Strike the maybe!

In this case they gave up their rights as well as ours. all of this for the sake of being sneaky.

  34. Sheep serve a purpose. The smart way forward team, as they call themselves, are useless. It's a shame the dems on the board fell for the same shell game. Has anyone stopped to figure out how much the residents of our town would have to lose to pay 1700 people? Pay the town and county the money they say they'll get . Pay the state taxes. Pay the three hundred million dollar loan .Pay the energy cost to run the casino. Pay employee benefits - if these are good jobs they should get benefits .Pay for the food and liquor the casino comps to get people there. Seems like we have to lose a lot of money to make the casino profitable. If all that money is lost at the casino how much can be left to spend in other businesses in town? Maybe the board is counting on the excess traffic on route 4 and the large number of pot holes not yet fixed to be the draw for this town, Who doesn't like hitting pot hole and getting stuck in slow moving traffic?

  35. Something (else) about the meeting notes bothers me. Feathers was quoted in the newspaper as saying "I like what Keith has done". Huh? What has Keith done? If you ask Keith about anything that got done, he always says he didn't do it, he even looks to others for simple explanations.

They just didn't do their job, and it's clear that they didn't know what the job was. The Saratoga PR team was driving the bus.

Anyone that does not have the same morale values that you and your family has OR is inclined in any way towards NEPOTISM needs to be eliminated immediately in any PRIMARY OR GENERAL ELECTION. We've been screwed in this town too many times and now we need to stick together and truly CHANGE East Greenbush. If we get tons of people out to there to VOTE and to voice their opinion instead of sit back; we may just get the right candidates to do this job of representation for the Town. 40. Two things are gonna happen at the end of the month. East Greenbush gets it with Governor approval and lots of trouble or we don't get it. If we don't get it and Featherstone turns his nose up at the town then you will find all of them scrambling to get out of the jam there are in. They will talk, oh they will talk. They will go on camera and make accusations as much as possible to get themselves off the hook. You will have all five of them going after one another to make themselves look good. Heck you might get a few of them to roll over on Featherstone and anyone from the county. Trust me if they want anything to go there way for now on they will talk. Otherwise no matter what they do they realize they are not getting reelected.

"We do have legal representation that looked at the resolutions, and to the best of our knowledge everything is legal. We made a business decision to get some economic development in town. We have a business that wants to develop property, and they have right to do so"

Yes Sue, they have the right to do so if you followed the law. But there seem to be some problems with your process. Counsel may have looked at the resolutions, but how you got to them is the problem.

The "back story" on this one is really interesting. How did Feathers land in East Greenbush on the most inappropriate and unlikely piece of property in the region? Time to start asking that question. Wasn't this a "fix" from the beginning by the usually EG "fixers?" That's why the Board didn't ask any questions. You weren't allowed to. It was all decided by the money boys in the back room.

It’s ironic because the Town Board wants to SAVE EASTGREENBUSH, too. For all of us, it’s a quality-of-life issue. There are people who don’t want the casino because it will negatively impact their quality-of-life in the town but (according to the polls) there are just as many people who want it because it will positively impact their quality-of-life in the town. The Town Board is a body of residents who were duly elected to make decisions for the town. There was never any intent to exclude residents from the process, no malice of forethought whatsoever. There was a limited window of time and opportunity to throw our hat in the ring. It was kind of like those infomercials that say you can have this item but you must act within the next 5 minutes. Subsequently, we had another opportunity to vote so public information sessions and hearings were able to be held. The opposition spoke loudly and clearly but they are now using media and lawyers to make a bigger noise than they can make alone. Our town is in financial peril. We can’t even get a McDonalds to locate on Columbia Turnpike. Taxes are through the roof. We have a responsibility to consider the casino as the residents/taxpayers are entitled to as expedited a financial recovery as possible. There are those who don’t need tax relief, but there are plenty who do. We now need to come together as a community and continue to ask what we can do to help one another. The Town Board’s decision was made in an effort to help the town grow and prosper. Is it the perfect solution to our problems? Perhaps not, but it’s 100% true that we are trying to Save East Greenbush, too.

  44. I think all of you are giving the people on are town board too much credit, they were told what to do by the county. I will still vote against everyone of them on the town board, but it came from higher then them.

  45. The absurdity of all this is:

1.) Despite staggering amounts of taxpayer money spent by the town board there is still no audit for them and us to rely on for the true state of the town's finances.
2.) There is no plan, no goals, no actions, no vision no nothing in terms of a financial recovery plan.
3.) The organizational meeting showed beyond any doubt that the new majority is continuing the same nepotism and patronage hiring practices of the failed former majority.
4.) Secrecy remains the key way the new majority operates. Repression of public comments, Gilbert and DeFruscio's nasty and stupig blogs.
5.) What poll is Ms. Matters referring to?

Nice try MAM but all you provided was more partisan spin and excuses for a bad decision made badly.

  46. According to the FOIL, Mary Ann Matters was more concerned about protecting Keith then she was about protecting East Greenbush. Her mantra is "Save Keith Langley" not "Save East Greenbush". It it tortuous and Mary Ann Matters has to stop trying to deceive people into believing she cares about the Town when, in her own words, she cares about protecting and protection for Keith.

  47. MAM?-we cant get a McDonalds? thats because they sank thousands of dollars remodeling the McDs on Wolf Rd.(er Rt,4 ),What happened to the exciting news in the Supes report some months ago, stating that the former McDs on desolation rd.(er Rt.9-20)was going to become a Greene cnty.dialysis center, and Peebles dept.store was moving into the vacated planet fitness. They taking there time converting the old KFC into a Starbucks, and lets not forget that we had a buyer for the long vacated Weathervane.Which turns out to be Hart family LLC.who will probably tear down, and put a for sale sign on just like the former Teagans. But alls well because you clowns passed a resolution for a casiNO,DO WE HAVE A PLAN B?-what about the tax delinquency notices that were in the TimeUnion last week?It was a shorter list than usuall, but added up to over $600,000 thousand dollars. Are we doing anything about that? concerned citizen who unfortuntunately voted for you clowns.
