From A Good Friend of the "Fly"

Someone once noted that there are few things in history that had a more improbable outcome than the birth of this nation.  Against insurmountable odds, a small band of revolutionaries gave birth to a new form of government, of, by and for the people… and we have never looked back.
Last night, while on a much smaller scale, the residents of the Town of East Greenbush experienced a similar fate with the victory of the EG 1st team and Jack Conway, Tom Grant and Tina Tierney deserve congratulations.  Not just for winning, but doing so in a fashion that was respectful of the voters intelligence and for valuing the rights and needs of this community.
Leadership does not begin after the election or even after the swearing in ceremony.  It begins the day a team of people decides to pursue a course of action that would grant them the opportunity to make a substantive contribution to their community.  On that day, that team begins to surround themselves with like-minded people who help craft a message, formulate a plan and follow that plan.  The EG 1st team built just such a team and should be commended for it.
That said, the work that began months ago, goes into overdrive now and there is too much work to be done to take extended bows or victory laps.  Gloating is for suckers.  True leaders identify the work ahead and get right to it.  That’s what the EG 1st team promised and it is a reasonable expectation since, to their credit, they won an election free of the stigma of a major party.  They do not own any of the failed policies of the past decades, nor the contracts nor the budgets or a myriad of other facets of government that need to be corrected here.  Perhaps in this new, somewhat unexpected government, the real winners are disenfranchised residents in this town, who have something meaningful to contribute, but have been shut out because they had the wrong last name, belonged to the wrong party or just didn’t know the right guy.
There really isn’t a right guy anymore.  If you have a way to contribute that can help rebuild this town, this is a team that is as welcoming as lady liberty herself.  Your credentials matter more than your Facebook friends page, because here’s the thing… the EG 1st team isn’t Jack, Tom and Tina… it’s all of us and they didn’t get here on their own and they are very gracious to note that.  Residents gave them this opportunity and it is reasonable to assume that residents want to see them succeed.
So folks, be prepared to participate.  Introduce yourselves to your new government and get ready to get your hands dirty.  Attend a board meeting and show up with your input for improvements and your resume.  We now have the government that everyone always wanted, but no one thought we would ever get.
The work doesn’t start January 1st, it starts now.  We have an opportunity to be a part of building a new East Greenbush.  One where the successes are shared by many, not the few and to be part of that is something that will be rewarding and special.  So take a bow EG 1st… and get to work.  Like someone once noted… to whom much is granted, much is expected, but don’t worry, we don’t expect you to do it alone.

You ran a clean, issued-based, well organized campaign and we appreciate and applaud your efforts!

If you can manage the Town half as well as you did your campaign, East Greenbush will be 1st!

  4. BIG CONGRATULATIONS to EG1st! You have a mountain of work ahead of you but, you have an army to help you over that mountain. All the best!

Dave, Pete and Andrea---as a resident and taxpayer in EG, I thank you for your efforts, participation in the debate and the democratic process and, for allowing yourselves to be a choice for EG voters. Working together will hasten the town's healing process.

  6. "Of the people, by the people, and for the people".

No political party in the last several years has understood, let alone lived by, these simple principles of governing. The exceptions of certain individuals like Rick and MaryAnn Matters and Deb DiMartino are notable but because they are so exceptional.

Rick McCabe was about himself, his family members and his friends as he looted the town treasury for stipends and jobs.

Keith Langley surrounded himself with cronies who only represented special interests. And he lied like the proverbial rug about the state of town finances.

And now we , finally, have a team of bright, honest, caring people who understand what "for the people" really means.

Thank you Jack, Tom and Tina for putting yourselves through the process, for running a class campaign and for now being able to represent we - the people.

  7. Thanks to everyone for their kind words! Dave Van Wormer, Pete Stenson and Andrea Smyth have all reached out to me and I truly appreciate how gracious they have been. Trent Tibbits also reached out last night. I hope he stays involved. I haven't had a chance to talk to Larry or Keith yet but I expect to shortly.

Last night was a very exciting experience for Jo Ann and me. I loved how emotional Jo Ann got when the result was announced. She worked so hard on this and she deserved her joy. I can't tell you how great it was to see Tina and Tom earn their just rewards. No one (except Eileen and Mike) knows better than me how hard and skillfully they worked.

But more than anything else, thank you to the people of East Greenbush for putting your trust in Tina, Tom and me. We won't let you down.

  8. Congratulations EG1st! You have restored my faith that HONEST, decent people who work very hard to make our world a better place can actually come out on top. Despite the odds, the naysayers, and going up against a system that until now no one has had the conviction to do ......you did it. I can not wait to impart this lesson on my children today when they return home from school. I can not wait to show them a true life, right in our own backyard, story about 3 people (heros as far as I'm concerned) who said "We have had enough". I know there is a lot of work to be done and I will help in any way I can. I'm not sure anyone can truly understand yet the impact your win will have on us as a community. I believe your win will help us begin to feel proud to call East Greenbush our home again. I hope you can all take some time to relax and enjoy your victory ~

  9. Somewhere back around 2008 there was a meeting held at the library. There was talk of a Tea Party movement. That idea never grew legs.

But concerned citizens met other concerned citizens. And information was exchanged. Questions were asked. And further meetings were held.

Attendance at town board meetings went up. The public comment period grew more lively.

Blogs were created. More questions got asked. More information got shared.

Langley got elected in an anyone but McCabe referendum. He turned into a major disappointment and a 1 term failure as a leader and as a supervisor.

We discovered how totally useless and ineffective the state is as supporters of the regular people. The OSC wins the race to the bottom of that trash barrel.

More questions got asked. The people rallied to drive the mess called a casino from our door steps.

    More questions got asked.

And now, the back row boys and girls have their day in the sun. The crooks, the special interest, the failures, the liars get sent packing.

Wow. 2008 to 2016 has been quite an era for East Greenbush. And we finally can see the light.

  14. I am actually proud to call myself an EG1st supporter, and as Ann pointed out without the fear of retribution or someone on some other blog ripping my name apart in a smear campaign. Although I have always used my name, some people have not. I can't tell you how optimistic I feel about the coming years. I know EG1st will be hard pressed for results, and it will be quite hard to accomplish everything, but at least we know we will not be getting a raw deal by the political insiders.

Over the years it has been hard to watch the wickedness of the politics in this town ( I know EG isn't the only place this happens, but this is our home) Where the last name of a person means more, and if you are a friend or a family member of someone you always get the nod, and benefit of the doubt. But this year it is different. No more wink and nods, and it is what it is, because we say so. We have the chance for real government in this town.

As someone that has always helped out a little bit staying in the shadows, I am proud to do whatever it is the EG1st needs. "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Jack, Tina, Tom, congrats, You have my full support. Thank you EG for waking up!

  15. As we do the "victory lap," I hope the teachable moment is not lost on those who didn't win. This Town belongs to US - we who live here and pay taxes. Just because your candidate is elected, doesn't mean that you drive the bus for the whole Town. There is no "scale" that says if you're an insider or connected you can set the course of our municipality without consulting the rest of us. That casino thing was made of the same hubris that possessed General Montgomery in WWII and his Operation Market Garden. It was "the Bridge Too Far." It led to his defeat in that endeavor. A small group thinking that they "own this Town" will (hopefully) never emerge again. It's been a dominant "tradition" here, but it's OVER.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I can just see Langley sitting at his desk thinking 'I just don't understand it. Other towns had parades for the officials who tried to get a casino, I got fired.' He never got it and probably never will that government in America is about democracy, not dictatorship, and that the casino was only part of why he was fired. Government in America, Keith, is about inclusion, not exclusion. It's about respect, not contempt for people. We, the people, want to be ASKED not TOLD and the outcome of the election on Tuesday proves it.

  17. The EG1st victory should be the start of a movement all across America to take back government at all levels, local, state and federal. The movement could be called "We The People." The entitlement, you owe me, pay to play operation of government at all levels is not working anymore for the vast majority of citizens all across America. It's time for majority rule. Good job, East Greenbush!

    1. His no show only proves how much of a coward he really is. I'd feel bad for him but his arrogance and lack of respect got him where he is, making history for being slaughtered by a third party. Time for true governance in EG. It's been a long 18 months and the good citizens of East Greenbush took back our town and fought battles most don't even attempt to fight because they are said to be a lost cause. Not here, we showed that your voice and vote DO matter if you care enough. Kudos to EG1st, but the true winners are not only the residents of EG, but the rest of the country because we proved your vote DOES matter!

  21. Mr. Langley's absence at the public hearing last night for the 2016 budget speaks to how SELF-centered really is. It's HIS budget but he wouldn't show up for the good of the town or even to help the comptroller answer questions. Moving on...the comptroller did a fine job answering questions. Without Langley there, there was an open and free exchange of questions and answers. Things are looking up already but can't wait until Jan 1.

  26. Langley has never been much at the work of being supervisor. If he is going to cease working all together he should do the honorable thing and just resign and get it over with. Let Jack get a jump on doing all the work Langey neglected for the last four years.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If Langley resigns, the Deputy Supervisor would take his place unless three board members voted to appoint someone to take his place. Whether he comes to work or not, he collects a full paycheck. Why? Because he's an elected official. If he fails to regularly come to work, the only recourse is to vote him out, which was done in a big way on 11/3. Now, all we can do is wait but please enjoy the holidays knowing that the cavalry has mounted up and is well on the way.

  27. Here's my vote to never mention Langley again on this blog - lets all move forward. Let start focusing on:

the audit, certifying the payroll, filling open positions throughout the town, creating an Economic Development committee, negotiating our open contracts, determining fair water & sewer rates, supporting our DPW workers AND our Commissioner (hint stop the fighting and work together), figuring out how to run our new sewer plant (we own it, lets make it work for us), educating our planning, zoning, and Town board how to work together for the common good of the Town, enforcing code violations, etc.

My vote is no more complaining about people or the past, lets put all of our energy in making creative contributions to the improvement of OUR Town.

    1. Hi Anony.....I "Almost" agree with you. If you mean cutting down on the cheap shots, I agree. But it is a dangerous thing to erase the content of history books. This has been at least a 10 year struggle, and it's not over until the problems are fixed. Aand I think it can be said that the people who ended up loosing over those years, including the last election really didn't understand what was happening around them. They "mis-perceived the meaning of events. EG1st was perceived as "not a factor" by one element. All of us who worked in on this project must never forget how we got here.

    2. It's important to be the people to be made aware of the many failings of the Keith Langley administration at the local government level, just as it was important for the people to have been made aware of the many failures of the administration of President Richard Nixon. Abuse of power by elected officials at every level of government needs to stop. The best way to stop these abuses is to let the taxpayers know what they are paying for.

      Delete
  28. Supervisor Langley needs to be held accountable for his actions, lest future elected officials forget that they are elected to represent the people. Not themselves and a few select insiders.
Unfortunately, the residents and taxpayers of East Greenbush will be paying for the actions of Keith Langley for decades to come. Since we will be stuck with the bill, it is important to know who was responsible for running up our debt.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The history of the hole that EG is in is replete with the names of both Rep and Dem administrations. Don't we remember the attack on the Board with the Dem lawsuit which removed Cristo and Danaher, leaving a crippled Board? Don't we remember the attempt to reduce Langley's salary? Games all over the place aimed at increasing party political power at the expense of the public interest. We should never forget.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ok, never forget but stop worrying about the past, it is past. Agreed the prior administration was far less than ideal, but unless you have a legal complaint, complaining only wastes time and energy. Myself, I'm focusing on the future and installing people and procedures to try and prevent issues of the past from happening again. Rep or Dem, lets stop them all from abusing our Town again by using these next four years to install an Open and Transparent Government that blocks these shenanigans from ever happening again. We will need a lot of effort and strength to create a functional and respectable government here so that will be my focus the next four years, I hope it is all of yours too.

When the American colonist were fighting for their freedom from England the English called them rabble in arms I am proud to be part of the rabble that supported EG 1st May this be a new day for East Greenbush and a beacon to all Americans that no political party owns this country The people own this country and we are tired of corruption and greed. Look over your shoulders congressmen and women Senators you may be next. I can only hope!

  32. 826- I don't disagree with you. However, it is very important to find out the reasons Langley and the Republicans and Democrats associated with him did what they did: Trying to push a casino without any public input; The massive cost overruns and structural concerns associated with the Sewerage treatment plant; No system of internal controls at Town Hall; The Town being ranked BELOW junk bond status. Langley and company could be testifying in various legal actions for years on various topics.
So while I agree with you that it's important to focus on the next few years and I'm sure Jack, Tom and Tina will take care of that for us, it's also important to find out WHY Langley and his associates made the series of decisions that were demonstrably bad for the Town. People need to know WHO specifically benefitted from these bad decisions. It certainly wasn't the non connected taxpayers and residents.

  33. After the tremendous and unprecedented win for EG1st on 11/3, will E.G. voters hold county legislators Phil Danaher, Leon Fiacco, Robin Bayley and Kelly Hoffman accountable for their part in welcoming a gambling casino to Thompson Hill in East Greenbush or will they be given a pass? These legislators also heavily supported Keith Langley for re-election, especially Danaher, Bayley and Fiacco, who just built a liquor store on Rt 4 very much under the radar. These legislators, brought to us by county broker Rich Crist, are also part of the two-party political system of corruption. Will they get to stay or will they be fired right along with Casino Keith? It was the county that originally spoon-fed the casino acquisition to Langley until he eventually choked to death on it at the polls. It seems a shame if Langley has to suffer alone but will anyone even remember the legislators part in the attempt to weaken E.G. for their own selfish political and personal gain when they come up for re-election in two years?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fiacco was denied a liquor license for that store....

      Delete
    2. 8:38 a.m. And your point is? Leon Fiacco is still very much a part of the problem in E.G., including his behind-the-scenes push to make cousin Danny the Commissioner of Public Works. I'm with 11/7 @ 9:37 p.m., we need answers but, short of legal action, we'll never get those answers from any of the "players" because the two-party system of govt is designed to protect itself from the outcries of the rabble- rousers. We did what we could do, we defeated them at the polls but players like Planning Board attorney Danaher and legislators Bayly and Fiacco should take the fall with Langley to fully send the message that those who turn their heads the other way and ignore illegal plat approvals, backroom paving deals, mock duplexes, 1 Cooper Ave., Honey Bee Spa, etc. or otherwise participate in actions against the people WILL be held accountable at the polls as well. We got this EG1st party started in a big way. E.G. is the largest town in Rensselaer County. Let's take out ALL the trash associated with the McLangley administration or the stink of it will linger on well after he's gone.

      Delete
    3. Certainly Danaher should not be reappointed as attorney to the planning board as he allowed Matt Polsinello to sign a plat approval without a resolution or a public hearing for the land on Thompson Hill. Dave Gruenberg should be sent packing as well. Not only a water-carrier for the Republican Party he is also attorney to the Republican majority at the county legislature. When he was called on it as being a conflict of interest - he denied it was. A pretty self-serving statement if there ever was one. And the zoning board attorney who let the Board vote on whether a Casino could be put on Thompson Hill under the code -- well, the new Board should show him the door too. Either he was in bed with the casino developers or he has a serious problem understanding and explaining the law.

    6. In our town, we elected three people who were public in their opposition of the casino, we should be very proud of ourselves for supporting them and voting them in to office. The other candidates did nothing to stop the casino. We never saw Dave, Pete, Andrea, Trent, or Larry during our fight. I heard Dave, Pete, and Bridget went to the Elks on Election night. Good for them, and good for our town that those 3 had the maturity to do so.

    8. 4:50 p.m. What are you trying to say? If it is what I think it is, positions will be advertised, resumes will be collected, and the best people for the jobs will be hired without politics mucking up the process. Coming over to the Elks after the election to shake the hands of the winners does not a job offer make. By all accounts Langley has been crushed by the loss. He never saw it coming. It remains to be seen if he'll be seen at another public meeting this year.

    9. 11/8 @ 10:30 a.m. Are you suggesting that Danaher should only lose his job as an attorney to the town in E.G. but not as a legislator? It was county legislators Danaher, Fiacco and Wrangler Rob who lobbied hard for a 5-0 vote on the town board in favor of the casino. In fact, it was the county leg that pitched the casino idea to Langley. The county started the casino engine and revved it up until Langley eventually drove the bus off a cliff. The county leg didn't care if E.G. residents wanted a casino on pristine Thompson Hill. They also didn't care if Langley took the fall for it. Will the county now provide Langley with the proverbial plumb patronage position for being the sacrificial lamb? Stay tuned.

    13. This may help to answer your question about the illegal Plat approval. Seems that the Thompson Way development got going without the requirements of the law being followed. This has been raised a number of times with the Town Board and a couple of the Town's attorneys. There has been NO response whatsoever.

    14. @7:41, the fuss is that to grant final plat approval, first there needs to be a public hearing and then there needs to be an actual resolution that our planning board must vote on. Our town chose to bypass NYS Law and just rubber stamp this approval. There was no meeting. No Minutes. No resolution. No public hearing. No respect for the law. When our Supervisor and town attorney were questioned many times regarding this, they received - blank stares.

What's NOT "to bad" is that the PB Chair and attorney will surely be all done on Jan 1...so they won't be in a position to "disagree" with anyone anymore after that. And all the unfortunate oversights (?) will be investigated, the results of which will hopefully be brought to light publicly. No doubt there's a lot of wrongdoings to correct but they must be fully investigated and corrected and there must be accountability. I think a number of people must be quite nervous about the win on 11/3. First you mess up, then you fess up.
And stop with the "Donnie Boy" nonsense. Grow up and show some respect. Like it or not, the "fly" has earned it.

  36. I don't disagree that the stipends should be recouped and Toni Murphy should pay back some money as well, but I think it is more important to audit Bruen and bring some oversight into that entity. I was appalled to learn at the budget hearing that Bruen gets away with not repaying the town the money it owes. Bruen has run a renegade operation for years and has bled the Town dry. We need to get another audit in there and follow through on the recommendations. The mismanagement of our tax dollars has got to stop.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The Planning Board attorney, and the Planning Board Chairman both agreed that the Thompson Hill project was handled totally appropriately. Worry about your stipends because you don't have a clue what your talking about. This new board is going to pay as much attention to you as the last one.

    1. When it comes to final Plat approvals, it takes more than the PB Attorney and the PB Chair on agreeing to something. The meeting minutes and the Resolution by the PB authorizing the Chair to sign the final approval have been requested on a number of occasions. They apparently don't exist, which leaves the PB Attorney and the PB Chair is something of a pickle, I'd say. Looks more like some free-wheeling favoritism for the usual insiders. Throw in the paving of the road under dubious circumstances, a "duplex" with four front doors, and then the casino fiasco involving some of the same personages and an interesting picture takes shape.

    2. To "To Gadfly 9:02 AM", it is even more concerning that pur PB Chair and attorney see nothing wrong with bypassing the law. 1. This string explains perfectly why Langley lost and why JTT won in a landslide on 11/3. Langley knows perfectly well that he wasn't doing his job responsibly for the people of E.G. because he spent virtually ALL of his time pandering to the monied players who he thought would guarantee his re-election. ALL he thought about, to the point of obsession, was his re-election. He was so busy trying to keep his job that he failed to DO his job. The people spoke and fired him and rightly so. Now there is nothing but bitterness coming from the Langley camp. They refuse to admit that they $h!t the bed badly and that the time has come to accept it and stop blaming everyone else for it. The fact is, every decision Langley made was wrong because he flat out refused to surround himself with the right people...period! The sooner they accept it, the better off we'll all be. The Dems have shown more class around the election results than the Reps ever will, so kudos to them for that.

    2. Absolutely right Anonymous 8:06AM. The question is would you rather be surrounded by people telling you that everything is alright or by people telling you the truth. Because in Langley's case the people that he was surrounded with were telling him everything would be alright, when in reality they should have been telling him something completely different. I think I would want to be surrounded by honest people and not yes people. Tell me the truth.

The election is over and even if EG1st wasn't even in it, chances are Langley and his team would have lost, after all he did come in third and that is really quite hard to do for an incumbent.

One last thing as Ann pointed out below here, Thank you to all the veterans out there!!! I for one appreciate your service to this country.

  40. Sadly, Keith Langley was a no show at today's Veterans Day ceremony at the American Legion. It was very encouraging to see Toni Murphy, Jack Conway and Tom Grant sitting together. I'm very optimistic that they will be able to work together over the next four years.

  41. Keith was not in attendance at the Veterans Day ceremony? Unless an emergency cropped up, that is disgusting.

  42. Supervisor Keith Langley was also a no show at today's pre-board meeting at Town Hall.
Not good Supervisor Langley, not good at all.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Supervisor Langley failed to attend the pre-board meeting tonight. Developers appeared before the board to present their projects but absent the supervisor. What kind of message does that send to those who want to do business with the town? It's pretty clear than the supervisor does not intend to appear at a public meeting again for the rest of the year. He shows up at town hall briefly to sign checks or whatever and then he scoots out again. Even Rick McCabe served out his last six weeks after he lost the election in 2011. On the bright side, no more Ed Gilbert sitting in the front row fiddling with his phone and scarfing down peanuts like he's at the circus. Only a month and a half to go before professionalism, maturity and order prevails. Can't wait.

  45. Jack, Tom and Tina have already taken ownership of their jobs, especially in light of the fact that the supervisor has gone AWOL to sulk and pout about his defeat on 11/3. The town attorneys are also concerned, to say the least, about the supervisor's disappearing act. No worries. Jack, Tom, Tina, Mary Ann, Deb and Phil are present. They'll get through to Dec 31st just fine.

    1. Big worries! The current Town Board should move to raise 2016 taxes to the cap rather than push it off, Langley style. The town will be hamstrung unnecessarily unless this board has the strength to act. Lily Livered Langley stepped aside and, in so doing, he created an opportunity to do the responsible thing.

      Delete
    2. Councilperson Malone has said he will vote in favor of amending the Budget to the Cap. Good for him. That is the responsible thing to do. Thank you Phil.
Let's see what Mary Ann Matters and Deb DiMartino do. Will they be supporting the failed policies of Keith Lsngley or the open and transparent approach of Jack Conway, Tina Tierney and Tom Grant.
We will know for sure at next Wednesday's Town Board Meeting.
Here's hoping that MaryAnn and Deb cast their votes for East Grernbush instead of for Keith Langley.
The voters spoke loud and clear on Novrmber the 3rd that they wanted the Langley SWF era done. It's time for MaryAnn and Deb to put East Greernbush First!

    3. 10:59 a.m. As long as the town is paying out exorbitant amounts of money for overtime and consultants (i.e. millions of dollars), there should not be a tax increase. The problem is not a lack of money, it's the mismanagement of money. E.G. taxpayers, just like residents in most municipalities, overpay in taxes to compensate for the mismanagement of town finances. Jack, Tina, and Tom were elected to put an end to that. There is no need for a tax increase, just for proper, responsible management of tax dollars. Please remember that. The Dems and Reps are salivating over the prospect of EG1st getting into office and immediately raising taxes but our newly elected officials are working hard, even as we speak, to cut the fat out of the budget. Let's give them time to analyze the situation and see what they can do before we draw any of our own conclusions.

  46. This is NOT a joke. The town board needs to suspend Langley without pay. His pay is contingent on his fulfilling his responsibilities. Unless he has a valid medical excuse his passive aggressive childishness needs to be managed by the town board.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't believe the Town Board can suspend Langley, as an elected official it is up to his discretion to take time off without Town Board approval. It's OK, he just proved why he wasn't re-elected and we will have a functioning board with out him. If anyone recalls, the last meeting that didn't include childish antics was last year at a pre-board meeting that was run by Ed Gilbert ironically. Let's be thankful we don't have to see the Supervisors disrespect and lack of, well any thing. We are better off that he is hiding.

      Delete
    2. You can't do anything to deadwood elected officials except vote them out. Mission accomplished!

      Delete
    3. I do NOT agree. At all. Langley has responsibilities. Being a baby about losing is NOT one of those. He needs to earn his salary. He needs to be accountable. He needs to be professional. I know from experience his work ethic has always been questionable. But he needs to support an orderly and professional transition. If he cannot do these things the town board should cease to pay him. It is exactly that simple.

      Delete
    4. Actually 6:49 a.m. the town board, even with three votes, has no power to "cease to pay" an elected official. According to reliable reports, the supervisor is reporting to work to handle essential tasks, like signing checks, to keep the town running. Whether or not he makes any more public appearances, the rest of the board, the town attorney, the town clerk and the deputy supervisor will be here for the remainder of the year to handle town business.
      Be well.
      Mary Ann

      Delete
    5. If I recall correctly the then town board led by Ginny O'Rien proposed to cut the supervisor's pay. That was four years ago come January . Why doesn't this town board then cut Langley's pay to part time since that appears to be all he is willing or capable of working?

This is not a joke or sarcastic although I am sure it reads that way.

      Delete
    6. I believe that the "O'Brien initiative" to reduce Langley's salary failed because it was against NYS Town Law. I believe that the law states that a Town elected official's salary cannot be reduced from the amount listed in the schedule published with the Tentative Budget.

      Delete
  47. I hope things can settle down so that cooler heads can prevail. That's certainly not the East Greenbush tradition, but perhaps we can set a new standard. Remember when Cristo and Danaher were elected, the local Dems filed a lawsuit to have them removed because they were at the same time members of the County Legislature. This was based on an imperfect law, which was corrected by the Legislature. But we had to suffer with a three member Board for some time. And then when Langley was elected, the Dem majority on the Board attempted to reduce his salary because he was "inexperienced." Childish games aimed at elbowing the opposition for power without any real policy base - just control of the nepotism and patronage. When I wrote about a "clean break" also included in that category was the mischief described above.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You somehow fail to mention that the law suit prevailed, Don, or that the local law was corrected AFTER the suit!

      Delete
    2. Your point being??? Of course the suit prevailed and the local law was corrected after the suit. My point was that there was really no public benefit in the action of the Dem committee in bringing the suit in the first place. It was brought to gain control of the nepotism and patronage activities, and in the end left the Town with a crippled Board. I didn't fail to mention the "success" of the lawsuit at all. I said it left the Town with a three member Board for some time.

      Delete
    3. And now, ironically, we are back to a crippled three member town board again because Langley can't face the music in life unless he has a chair to sit on when the music stops. When the music stopped at 9 p.m. on Nov 3rd, Jack, Tina and Tom were the only ones sitting and Langley has been hiding ever since leaving three part-time board members to make decisions for the town. This is an epic failure of an ending for both major parties in E.G. and it explains perfectly why they were ousted. Just two more board meetings to go before EG1st restores order and professionalism to the town board. Can't wait.

    4. Yup. To quote a former Supervisor of recent memory, "if Jack wins, we don't get anything." The machine agenda has always been about "fixing" and getting stuff for the insiders. It's over now, and the boys (and girls) are upset. So be it. They deserved to be buried by a landslide. They did it to themselves.

      Delete
    5. Right, but the machines will be working hard to get it back, so JTT will have to be smart over the next four years about grooming the right people for election so that the people can stay in charge for decades to come.

He should have listened to those who worked for his election in hopes of reform. But DeF was available for rides in the truck I guess.

  50. The question now is, how does the new board govern without falling victim to the partisan mindset of previous years? That's a hard question to answer.

Finding qualified people in a sea of people who are used to doing things their way and easily influenced by people not part of the government is a difficult battle. Both the dems and repubs have a tendency to "play" politics with people inside town hall. So how can any of the people who have been involved in the past be trusted?

Anyone connected with McCabe or Langley can't be trusted to give a full effort to help fix this town. The new board needs new people who aren't or can't be influenced by the old guard. The people behind the scenes will NOT sit back quietly and watch thirty years of control wash out to sea. They will do everything they can to manipulate the situation and anyone who appears to be "switching sides" will simply be waiting for the party to gain back control. Their loyalties are fixed in years of benefits and control. The new board needs to remain very aware of that fact and carefully select who they will enlist to usher in a new government in East Greenbush. If the names are familiar, the effort will be futile.

    1. From some of the comments I've been getting (most unprintable) it's apparent that 7:26 AM above has hit the nail on the head. But there is a difference between municipal employees who do their jobs and the "operators" or "operatives." It's a political and governmental "culture shift" which is necessary. Maybe the "operatives" and water carriers can smell it happening and they aren't too happy about it.

      Delete
  51. 7:26 a.m. That was a very well written piece. The members of the new board should print it, frame it, and read it once a week for the next four years. The trust of the new board will have to be earned and anyone who is too trusting could be burned by it. The mindset of the new board should be like centurions standing guard over the town and ever ready for marauders because they WILL be lying in wait for every opportunity to capitalize on the slightest chink in the new government's armour. Higher levels of government like the state and also the media will be watching. Some of the more bitter opponents of EG1st are hoping they fail and fall flat on their faces. Already people are lining up to be taken care of. This won't be easy but then nothing worth a damn ever is.

The candidate failed to file three disclosure reports during her unsuccessful run and faces a year in the slammer on each count if convicted. The finance disclosure unit was apparently created in the AG's office in exchange for the demise of the Morland Commission.

  57. I thought with Langley gone the drama would stop but boy was I wrong. Last night's meeting was chock full of drama when the resolution regarding the extension of the Witbeck PDD came up for vote. Both Mary Ann Matters and Deb DiMartino voted the resolution down refusing to state reasons for doing so. That was puzzling on so many levels because before that night it appeared they would approve the PDD. Now maybe they didn't want to hurt the developer's feelings - since he was there. But I think both he and we deserved an explanation. A little bird surmised it might have something to do with the density of the project. But here is the kicker - the delay was not due to any inaction on the developer's part - but because there had been a moratorium on the sewer hook-ups - which was entirely the town's fault. What would have been the harm in an extension? The extension was in no way an approval of the project. Is this the way we should be treating developers -- local or not?
The EG1st team favor open and transparent government. The type of behavior exhibited last night must come to an end.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am not sure but why should they vote to support extending the PDD if they don't support the project? What is the point of extension if it won't go further? From the platform it seems like EG1st wants to stick to planning and zoning that doesn't need PDD.

    3. Supervisor Langley didn't show up for the TB meeting and the TB voted the extension down. It's time to move on. If the developer wants to resubmit a PDD request, let him start over and do so through the proper channels. I'm sick and tired of favored developers getting special treatments This PDD was originally scheduled to expire 4 months ago. The developer was already given a 4 month extension. Enough is enough!

She said people were also shouting out at her at the meeting and she didn't want it to turn into a free-for-all with the whole room. I can totally understand that. If anyone really cares about why she voted no, you can always call her or e-mail her. She always responds.

  61. So now we're hearing absentee Supervisor Keith Langley is thinking about actually attending another hastily scheduled "Special" Town Board meeting to vote in favor of granting yet another PDD extension to a well connected family to allow them build a massive multi family development on Phillips Road directly across from the Soccer Field.
Yes, this is the same PDD Extension Resolution defeated by the TB just TWO DAYS AGO.
What's next? Some last minute votes to approve 1 Cooper Avenue and the 4 door duplex on Thompson Hill?
Guess if you're an insider developer you can even get Supervisor Langley to show up for a meeting. Wonder who the required 3rd vote will be? Matters? DiMartino? Both? Can't wait to hear the explanation for their latest flip flops.

    1. You are kidding right? If this meeting is called the residents should demand Langley explain why the vote wasn't important enough for him to vote the first time. Harts and Witbecks get do-overs. DOes anyone else get special treatment? Guess Malone and his connected friends can get Langley out of hiding. Hope EG first sticks to the zoning and doesn't give special treatment to these people like they always get and will get if there is a special meeting. Insiders once are insiders always. Not good.
